The dress is taken from Maki Oh’s much acclaimed A/W ‘15/16 collection ‘Omi’, which translates to ‘Water’. The collection explores the idea of adopted identities as result of West Africa’s long history with cultural appropriation focusing on the true origins of the African mermaid ‘Mami Wata’.

Inspired by the surface of water when the sun is out, the dress is made out of the African textile, Adire and features different panels of silk and linen – hand-dyed with indigo. Over the course of her bright career, Maki Oh continues to champion African textiles.

Solange has worn Maki Oh on several occasions and previously collaborated with the label on its AW ‘13/’14 short film by curating the film’s music, ultimately, giving the label rights to use her song ‘Look Good With Trouble’ from her best-selling album, ‘True’.
