On August 11th, 2016, up to 12 of Nigeria’s best seed stage startups will compete to represent the country at the Seedstars Summit and win up to USD 1.5 million in equity investment prizes.
Seedstars World, the global seed-stage startup competition for emerging markets and fast-growing startup scenes, is returning to Nigeria on 11 August 2016, with the support of Omidyar Network and local ambassador Seedspace.
The startups selected to compete at the Seedstars Lagos event need to be less than 2 years old, have raised less than USD 500,000 in funding and have built a minimum viable product, ideally with existing traction and scalable nature. With a strong network of international partners such as Inmarsat, INADEM, Standard Bank and Deloitte, Seedstars World is looking for smart startups that solve regional issues and develop profitable products for the global market, to support their regional businesses and growth.
To provide local entrepreneurs with this opportunity and aiming to deliver the best possible event, Seedspace/Seed Stars Academy will represent the initiative.
“Our mission is to discover startups that come from bustling, emerging economies like Nigeria and give them access to opportunities for support and funding. Specially this year, we have launched our first physical coworking space in Nigeria called Seedspace and the Seedstars Academy where we are constantly striving to add more value to our startups. Therefore, I am very excited for our Seedstars world Lagos event in Lagos. ” Benjamin Benaim, founding partner at seedstars.
“Lagos has proved itself, time and again to be the leading innovation hub of the continent. The startups who participated on our event last year were phenomenal and we are very excited to come back this year, as we know for sure the bars have been raised and there will be even more amazing startups coming our way.” says Selam Kebede, Associate for Africa.
After a successful collaboration with Omidyar Network in South Africa, both parties will continue their collaboration in Nigeria. “’We as ON are excited about the attention and excitement SeedStars has brought to the tech and startup ecosystem in South Africa, and we look forward to continuing this journey into Nigeria” says Charmaine Padayachy, Principal at Omidyar Network.
Further support is provided by international partners, such as the Swiss embassy, Orange, PayU and The Jacobs Foundation, to bring the “Transforming Education Prize” (TRECC), which will award the best startup in the education space from around the world with a prize of over USD 50,000. The startup that wins this competition is invited to compete at the Seedstars Summit that annually takes place in Switzerland. Nigeria has been represented by Simple Pay, a 3rd party payment processing platform. Applications for the Seedstars World event are open now and startups that wish to compete can apply here.
