I am Summaiya Afreen, Co-Founder and Co-Director of a social enterprise Lakshya Jeevan Jagriti, India (meralakshya.org). Our mission is to bring up the level of lives of the people who live around us by helping them to remove their barriers in gaining better jobs and leading a happy family life. We provide them necessary job skills like language training, computer know how, and its application. We help them realize the importance of gaining skills through regular counseling and theme-based workshops.
I belong to a middle class family. My father respected my decision of being a social entrepreneur, the fact which always gives me strength. I conceptualized this organization when I was in college along with one of the coaches in the collage, Mr Rahul Goswami, who is now the co-founder of the organization. We decided to invest the prize money won at Indian Institute of Management poster competition to register the organization. Seven of my batch mates also joined me to lay the foundation of the organization.
With the case studies of 10,000 changed lives around us we feel ignited to move ahead on the path. We have been acknowledged by society, by various organizations like CADVA (Caribbean American Domestic Violence Awareness), we are now partners in the mission. We have been supported and guided by the mentors and coaches we met during this journey. Since every day is a day of new learning and made corrections, we improved and won various national and international business competitions. To name few
- Tata social enterprise challenge, held by Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta
- Kalpvriksha Social Enterprise 1st position held by Indian Institute of Management, Indore
- Startup Weekend 1st position held by Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai
- SOCAP 2016
- Global Good Fund Fellowship 2016
- YSE 2017 Singapore
- ODI challenge 2017
We have been discussed and highlighted in various news channels and print media.
Our future plans for the project are to reach more destinations, national and international, and help people realize the importance of bringing their lives to the next level and live a happy family life.
We face several obstacles that we were able to overcome. First finance: we bought used furniture to set up our office and look at other methods to collect resources. Second was hiring man power. We decided to enroll our students onto volunteering and offered jobs. Our students come from various walks of lives and are at different age groups, they are school going kids, working professionals, domestic workers, house wives, parents, and grandparents. It is important to keep them in the cycle of improvements once they enroll with us. We conduct various theme-based workshops and activities and help them think about it.
If you have a passion to work for the community, than be consistent. Keep investing on your personal development. The more you work on your development, more impact you can create.
