Registration is now open for the first Lagos International Poetry Festival in West Africa, to be held in Lagos from October 28th to November 1st! The theme of the inaugural event is “Borderless Words.” The five-day long festival will be held in various venues throughout the city including Freedom Park and the University of Lagos. According to festival director Efe Paul Azino, “the festival will aim to erase cultural, racial, gender, and ethnic divides through poetry.”
Register to join masterclasses and workshops on several literary subjects, such as Transitioning from a poetaster to a Poet led by poet and writer Dami Ajayi. A session titled From Imagery to Metaphor and Back: Reducing and Exploding Narrative Poetry will be facilitated by Inua Ellams. Acclaimed actress and spoken word poet Titilope Sonuga will lead a class on Open Heart Surgery: Writing from a Place of Honesty and Vulnerability. Interested patrons are advised to register now, as space is limited and registration is free.
Sponsored by Star Larger Beer and Freedom Park, other events will include an opening cocktail reception, panel discussions, and spoken word performances. Headliners will include Warsan Shire (winner of the first Brunel University African Poetry Prize), Prof. J.P. Clark, Odia Ofeimun, and Dike Chukwumerije, among others.
