A celebration of food and culinary creativity in the African diaspora

Dine Diaspora will host “Chop Bar – A Global Food Experience” on August 28, 2016 from 3 pm to 6 pm EST at Capital Fringe in Washington, DC.  Attendees will taste Caribbean-inspired bites created by Featured Chef, Jonathan Harris, while enjoying drinks and socializing with a diverse group of attendees.

The event draws on the ambiance of West Africa’s makeshift restaurants called “chop bars,” where people gather over food, music, and conversation. Celebrating the global African diaspora, Chef Jonathan Harris will curate a Caribbean inspired tasting menu that will take attendees on a culinary journey from DC to various parts of the Caribbean. Attendees will enjoy a four-course curated tasting menu that starts with Mumbo Shrimp and Grits and ends with a Trenchtown Penne.  All dishes will be served cocktail style and will include a signature cocktail.

Chef Harris explains “this menu reinvents familiar dishes.  I take a typical shrimp and grits dish and localize it to DC by using the area’s famous mumbo sauce, while turning the usual jerk chicken into a slider. Each dish has something unique in the ingredients that makes it different and worth every bite.”

Chop Bar will not only celebrate food and culinary creativity, but also highlight local businesses. With various sponsored giveaways, many businesses will connect with DC’s food enthusiasts and wider community. The event sponsors include Arik Air, Split, Nubian Hueman, Largess Affair, Divine Chocolate, and Eno’s Chop Bar.

“Chop Bar is not just about food, it’s an opportunity to experience the diverse and rich culture of the African diaspora.  From the moment attendees walk in the door, they will be transported to a place reminiscent of a West African chop bar with the good food of the Caribbean – all without ever leaving DC. That is what we call a global experience!” says Dine Diaspora co-founder, Nana Ama Afari-Dwamena.
