A partnership that is a force for fashion and economic empowerment
Ghana-based sustainable accessories brand AAKS and Rwanda-based social enterprise Indego Africa have recently joined forces in a partnership that is sure to produce vibrant and beautiful artisanry. Their new AAKS x Indego Africa collection features three handcrafted and richly textured navy and black handbags. This exciting new partnership will not only produce gorgeous accessories but also is dedicated to empowering and uplifting artisan women in a celebration of artisanal skill and traditional techniques.
AAKS, previously featured in Ayiba Magazine, is an accessories line run by Akousa Afriyie-Kumi. After realizing a gap in the market for luxury bags in Ghana, Akousa developed AAKS, which focuses on the economic empowerment of Ghanaian women using locally sourced materials, such as raffia cloth, for its beautiful bags. All accessories made for AAKS, as well as the new AAKS x Indego Africa collection, are made by artisans in the women’s collective of Bolgatanga in Northern Ghana. Indego Africa is a nonprofit social enterprise and lifestyle brand that shares the same social focus as AAKS. All profits from Indego’s products, from richly saturated baskets to jewelry to accessories, are invested into education programs for the artisans who handcraft these products. The AAKS and Indego Africa partnership is most definitely a powerful force for fashion and for female economic empowerment on the continent and beyond.
