A Comprehensive Exhibition of Michael Chambers: Shadows to Silver - A 25 Year Retrospective at BAND19

Black Artists’ Networks Dialogue (BAND) in partnership with TD Bank and the Thames Art Gallery, Chatham, presents the photography of acclaimed Jamaican-Canadian artist Michael Chambers from January 25 – March 18, 2018 at BAND19.

Curated by Pamela Edmonds, Michael Chambers: Shadows to Silver – A 25 Year Retrospective , the most comprehensive compilation of Michael Chambers’ photographic works, demonstrates the artist’s masterful representations of the nude Black body. Inclusive of both the iconic black-and-white photography that the artist is known for and his confrontational vibrant images, Chambers’ artwork addresses themes of sexuality, desire, diaspora, cross-culturism, and belonging.

Michael Chambers immigrated to Canada from Kingston, Jamaica, in the late 1970s and remains based in Toronto. This retrospective body of work features pieces from the early 1990s era to present-day. Chambers’ activist practice surveys diverse representations of the human form, casting it as Black and powerful. Using formalist and metaphoric manipulations of light and shadows to produce his provocative imagery, Chambers renders the Black body visible and desirable while also subverting normalized aesthetics still prevalent in the fashion and beauty industry.

Anton Wagner’s 1997 film, The Photographer: An Artist’s Journey follows Michael Chambers and some of his models on art production expeditions in Canada and Jamaica. BAND will host a screening of the film, followed by a question and answer period with Wagner and Chambers on February 17, 2018, at the Revue Cinema in Toronto.

The images from Michael Chambers: Shadows to Silver – A 25 Year Retrospective have been gathered and will be bound into a catalogue. Copies will be available for purchase at BAND19.
